Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV - more commonly known as Bunions) are a common hereditary condition which affects the forefoot. They can occur on one or both feet and can affect all age groups to varying degrees.

This arthritic condition may often start as a little lump on the side of the big toe joint and can progress overtime to have bony enlargements and changes in the alignment of the lesser toes. This often causes problems with footwear fitting and leads to functional injuries with periods of prolonged physical activity.

Bunions can effectively be treated conservatively with custom made orthotics to reduce pressure loads on the forefoot and with the relevant footwear advice. In advanced cases, surgery may be considered via a Podiatric Surgeon, through which referral pathways are available through our clinic.
