Store-bought orthotics have prefabricated insoles that are made of rubber and usually a one size fits all.

Custom orthotics are designed specifically to treat your condition based on your medical history, foot examination and diagnosis. Made from your exact foot structure, custom orthotics are crafted from high-quality and specifically chosen materials.

Custom made orthotics are shoe inserts designed specifically for your feet. They are created from a detailed assessment and foot scan to support your arches, improve alignment and reduce pressure on problem areas.

Off the shelf inserts are made to a general shape and size, while custom orthotics are designed from your individual foot posture, movement pattern and health needs. This allows for more accurate support and pressure relief.

Orthotics can help with heel pain, plantar fasciitis, bunions, forefoot pain, flat feet, high arches, shin pain, Achilles issues and some knee and hip symptoms that relate to foot mechanics.

We begin with a full assessment of your feet, joints and walking style. Three dimensional scans or casts of your feet are then used to design orthotics that match your foot shape and treatment goals. The devices are manufactured in a specialised laboratory before being fitted and checked in your shoes.

Some people use orthotics long term, especially for structural or arthritic conditions. Others need them only through a period of pain or higher activity. Your podiatrist will discuss likely time frames and review your progress regularly.

Most orthotics are designed for everyday joggers or walking shoes. In many cases we can also design slimline devices for dress shoes or work boots. During your fitting we will check which of your shoes are suitable and may suggest footwear changes if needed.

Orthotics should feel supportive rather than painful. It is normal to have a short settling in period as your feet and legs adapt. You will be given a wearing schedule so you can build up time gradually and report any concerns.

With normal use, custom orthotics often last between two and five years. This depends on your activity level, body weight, shoe choices and how well you care for the devices. We recommend regular reviews to check fit and function.

Many private health policies provide a rebate for orthotics under extras cover, although limits vary. Medicare may contribute to consultation costs when you have a chronic disease management plan from your general practitioner, but does not usually pay for the devices themselves.

Not everyone needs custom orthotics. After assessing your feet and movement, your podiatrist will explain whether footwear changes and exercises alone are likely to be enough or whether orthotics are recommended as part of your treatment plan.
